📐 1. Geotextile Filter Design & Piping Prevention

Geotextile filters are used in river bank protection, retaining walls, and drainage systems to prevent soil erosion while allowing water flow. The USCS (US Army Corps of Engineers) criteria require that the geotextile's opening size (O95) and permeability satisfy both retention (O95 ≤ D85) and permeability (O15 ≥ D15). Failure leads to piping – internal erosion that causes structural collapse.

Retention criterion: O95 ≤ D85
Permeability criterion: O15 ≥ D15
Piping risk: high if O95 > D85 or permeability too low.

📂 3. How to Use the Calculator

  1. Enter soil gradation – D15, D50, D85 (from sieve analysis).
  2. Enter geotextile opening sizes (O95, O15) if known; otherwise leave zero for auto‑suggestion.
  3. Select filter type or let the tool recommend based on criteria.
  4. Compute: Click "Check Filter" – tool checks retention and permeability criteria, and calculates piping risk.
  5. 2D soil profile shows soil layers and filter placement.
  6. Batch CSV: Upload multiple soil samples for bulk analysis.
  7. PDF Report: Download a report with the profile image.
  8. History: All calculations saved locally; export or clear anytime.

📈 4. Real‑World Example

River bank protection, Bangladesh
D15=0.3 mm, D50=0.8 mm, D85=2.0 mm.
Recommended: non‑woven geotextile with O95≈0.5 mm, O15≈0.2 mm.
Retention: 0.5 ≤ 2.0 → OK. Permeability: 0.2 ≥ 0.3 → not quite → use thicker fabric.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

❓ What is piping and why is it dangerous?
Piping is internal erosion where soil particles are washed through filter openings, causing voids and eventual collapse. Our riprap design tool works with this filter check.
❓ How to choose between woven and non‑woven?
Woven (monofilament) has larger openings, better for drainage; non‑woven (needle‑punched) has better retention. The tool suggests based on your soil.
❓ Where can I find soil gradation data?
From laboratory sieve analysis. For preliminary estimates, see typical values in our soil database.
