🧭 What is a CRS?
A Coordinate Reference System (CRS) is a framework that defines how real-world locations are represented as coordinates (X, Y, Z). In hydrography, using the wrong CRS can lead to position errors of hundreds of meters – a disaster for navigation or construction.
CRS consists of:
- Datum – The mathematical model of the Earth's shape (ellipsoid + origin).
- Projection – How the curved Earth is flattened onto a map.
- Coordinate System – Geographic (lat/lon) or projected (Easting/Northing).
📐 Horizontal & Vertical Datums
Horizontal Datum (e.g., WGS84, NAD83, UTM) defines the position of the ellipsoid relative to the Earth's center. Vertical Datum defines the zero height (e.g., mean sea level, chart datum).
Common datums in hydrography:

🗺️ Map Projections in Hydrography
Because the Earth is curved, we use projections to display data on flat maps. For hydrographic surveys, the most common are:
- Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) – Minimal distortion in 6° wide zones. Preferred for large‑scale surveys.
- Mercator (Web Mercator) – Used in online charts (e.g., Google Maps, OpenStreetMap). Not recommended for accurate distance/area measurements.
- Lambert Conformal Conic – Often used for regional mapping at mid‑latitudes.
Hydrographic offices usually specify a projection in their project requirements. Always ask: "What is the CRS for this survey?"

- Obtain project specifications (client or port authority).
- If the final product is a nautical chart, use the national hydrographic office's CRS (often WGS84 for ENC).

Most modern multibeam echosounders and GNSS receivers can output positions in multiple CRS in real time.
