Introduction
Knowing the depth of the river is only half the battle. For dredging and river training, we must also know what the riverbed is made of. Sediment Classification is the process of identifying the materials on the bottom—whether they are soft mud, fine sand, or hard clay. Today, we focus on how to use sonar data to create a professional Riverbed Mapping report, which is essential for any Geotechnical Survey baseline.
1. Understanding Acoustic Backscatter
When a sonar pulse hits the riverbed, the strength of the return signal depends on the hardness and roughness of the material. This return signal is called Backscatter Analysis.
High Backscatter (Strong Return): Indicated by bright areas in the sonar image. This usually means hard materials like gravel, rocks, or consolidated clay.
Low Backscatter (Weak Return): Indicated by dark areas. This usually means soft materials like silt or fine mud that absorb the sound waves.
Acoustic Reflectivity: By measuring these intensities, we can "guess" the sediment type across the entire survey area without taking a physical sample at every meter.
2. The Classification Workflow
To turn acoustic data into a geological map, we follow these steps:
Backscatter Extraction: Pulling the intensity data from your MBES or SSS files.
Normalization: Correcting the data for beam angle and water column absorption to ensure consistency.
Ground Truthing: Taking physical "Grab Samples" or "Core Samples" from the riverbed to verify what the sonar is seeing.
Classification: Using software to segment the map into different zones (e.g., Zone A: Sand, Zone B: Silt).
3. Comparing Sediment Types

| Fine Silt / Mud | Very Low Reflectivity (Dark). | High risk of rapid siltation in dredged channels. |
| Medium Sand | Moderate Reflectivity (Grey). | Common in the Jamuna; easy to dredge but highly mobile. |
| Clay / Hard Pan | High Reflectivity (Bright). | Difficult to dredge; provides a stable foundation for structures. |

🛠️ Riverbed Mapping Check-List
[ ] Physical Samples: Have you collected enough grab samples to calibrate your Backscatter Analysis?
[ ] Frequency Consistency: Are you using the same sonar frequency for the entire area? (Different frequencies reflect differently).
[ ] Software Algorithm: Are you using "Angular Range Analysis" (ARA) or simple image classification?
[ ] Map Legend: Does your final map have a clear color code for each sediment type?
💡 The River Warrior's Secret
In the Jamuna River, the top layer of sediment can change after every tide or flood. When performing Sediment Classification, always look for "Bedforms" (ripples or dunes) in your Sonar Imagery. The shape and orientation of these ripples tell you which way the sand is moving. A professional Riverbed Mapping is not just about what is there today, but how it will move tomorrow.
